A Chaweng budget hotel is a 3-star stay, or a simple 4-star on the back of Beach Road, not a pool villa at SALA. The search is usually “close enough to walk to the sand and the bars, without paying beachfront money.” On 25 October 2026 the listing that does that most cleanly is Lub d: 120 m from Chaweng Beach, dorms and private rooms, breakfast listed at 250 baht if the rate does not include it.

Chaweng Residence is the small one, 18 rooms, and the furthest of this set from the main sand.

Lub d: 120 metres from the main beach
Lub d Koh Samui Chaweng Beach is a 124-room, 3-star hotel at 159/99 Moo 2, Bophut, opened in 2018, four floors. Agoda puts Chaweng Beach 120 m away. Check-in is from 2:00 PM, check-out until 12:00 PM. The airport run is listed at 15 minutes and 450 baht. Breakfast is 250 baht unless the rate includes it.
The room list includes 8-bed mixed and female dorms, and private rooms, including a sea-view category. There is an outdoor pool and a kids’ pool. The score is 8.9 from 3,273 reviews.
This is the one I would open first for central Chaweng on a budget. The sea-view private rooms are the category that goes first from late December through April. A free-cancellation rate locks today’s price. I am not quoting a nightly rate.
First Bungalow: on Chaweng Noi, not the bar strip
First Bungalow Beach Resort is the beachfront name in this set, and the beach is the south cove. Agoda lists a private beach and puts Chaweng Noi Beach at 30 m. The same listing puts the main Chaweng beach 2.39 km away, and the city centre 5 km. If you wanted to walk to Ark Bar after dinner, this is the wrong pin.
It is 3 stars, 174 rooms, two floors, opened in 1970, with the most recent renovation listed as 2012. Check-in from 2:00 PM, check-out until 12:00 PM. Breakfast 350 baht if not included. Airport transfer 400 baht, about 15 minutes. Score 8.2 from 3,570 reviews, the lowest score on this page. You are paying for the sand, not for a high review number.
COSI and SocialTel: same distance, different hotels
COSI Samui Chaweng Beach is 3 stars, 150 rooms, opened in 2017, four floors, check-in from 3:00 PM, check-out until 12:00 PM. Agoda puts Chaweng Beach at 470 m and Central Festival Samui at 230 m. Score 8.8 from 5,249 reviews, the largest pile of reviews here. There is an outdoor pool. Agoda did not list a breakfast charge or an airport transfer fee.
SocialTel Samui is the odd one out on star rating: Agoda shows 4 stars, not 3. Address 2 Chaweng Beach Road. Chaweng Beach is also 470 m, Central Festival 300 m, city centre 0.1 km. 85 rooms, opened 2022, four floors. Check-in from 3:00 PM until 11:59 PM, check-out until 12:00 PM, reception listed until midnight. The rooms on the listing are private rooms, including a quad ensuite and pool-view rooms. I did not find a dorm on the room list. Score 8.4 from 1,805 reviews. No breakfast or transfer charge was published.
Both are a walk to the sand, not a step onto it. COSI is the plainer 3-star with the review volume. SocialTel is the newer 4-star on Beach Road.
Chaweng Residence: small, and not that close
Chaweng Residence is 18 rooms, 3 stars, opened in 2005, renovated in 2022, four floors, at 19/2 Moo 3, Bophut. Agoda puts Chaweng Beach 1.57 km away and Chaweng Noi 1.15 km away. That is a ride, not a stroll, if the beach is the point of the trip.
Check-in is from 2:00 PM and only until 5:00 PM. Reception is listed until 10:00 PM. Check-out until 12:00 PM. Breakfast 200 baht if not included, the lowest printed breakfast here. Airport transfer 400 baht, about 10 minutes, the shortest airport time in the table. Score 8.8 from 1,016 reviews.
If you land late, the 5:00 PM check-in cutoff is the fact to read twice.
When the price actually moves
Koh Samui does not follow Phuket’s calendar. The wet season on this coast peaks from October into December. November is the wettest month. Climate averages quoted for the Ko Samui station put November near 445 mm and October near 295 mm, with February the driest month near 64 mm. Lonely Planet calls December to early April the driest stretch, and treats August as a shoulder month with fewer people and lower prices than that peak. What that means for a booking:
- Late December through April is when central Chaweng fills and rates rise. Christmas, New Year and February are the dates to book ahead. A free-cancellation rate locks the price you see today. Sea-view rooms, where a hotel has them, go before the street-side rooms.
- July and August are not the wet season here. The Gulf is mostly usable, with afternoon showers, while the Andaman coast is in its monsoon. August gets a mid-year bump from European summer holidays. It is busier than June. It is not the same price spike as Christmas, and I am not going to invent a percentage.
- October, November and early December are the wet, quieter months. That is when a cheaper rate is easiest to find. Booking “early for peak season” does not describe these months. East-coast swimming is the thing that suffers. Chaweng or Lamai is the beach comparison if you are still choosing the strip.
If you did not actually want budget Chaweng
Chaweng is the loud end of the island. If the brief is a pool villa and a beach café, that is a different hotel and a different beach. Beach Republic is at the north end of Lamai. Agoda lists it 30 m from the beach, 4.5 stars supplied by the property, 8.2 from 1,216 reviews, on the same 25 October check. It is not a budget stay. The Lamai comparison is Lamai beach hotels.
